The sixth minor update to Mozilla Firefox 3 has been released. Firefox 3.0.6 fixes security vulnerabilities, improves stability, improves the ability for scripted commands to work properly with plugins and resolves a handful of other small bugs. The security fixes are detailed in the Firefox 3.0.6 section of the Security Advisories for Firefox 3.0.
The Firefox 3.0.6 Release Notes have more details about the fixes in this minor upgrade. Existing Firefox 3 users are expected to get it via the software update feature built in to the browser or their own operating system's update facility.
As a reminder, Firefox 2.0.0.x is no longer supported and contains known security vulnerabilities. Users should upgrade to Firefox 3 by downloading it from the Firefox product page

Love it, or hate it – Firefox got one more addition to it’s browser that seems to have gotten a mixed reaction from the fans. The open new tab button rests at the end of your tab bar in Firefox 3.5 giving you an easier user interface to open a new tab.
Clicking on the little “+” icon at the end of your open tabs, opens a new tab. Seems simple enough, and I do like the fact that it gives one more clean way for new users to instantly figure it out.
How do I remove the new tab button?
Well, if you are handy with editing your userChrome.css file – this should be an easy customization to put in place. Just add this line:
.tabs-newtab-button {display: none;}

The idea of having a Firefox extension that gives you content related to what you are looking at is nothing new really, however I have found a Firefox add-on that will help you get it done in a new and exciting way.
Headup underlines words on pages when you browser. When you hover over those words, you get relevant content from popular web services.
Technically speaking, they “presents you with textual and rich media content related to the objects and terms it identifies on the pages you browse.” Here are a few more examples from their web site:

Want to increase your privacy on your PC? With the release of Firefox 3.5, our favorite browser now has a Private Browsing mode. Usually your browser remembers the web sites you have visited, your user names and passwords, your browsing history and more. However, with this newest addition to the Firefox 3.5 feature list, you can now go incognito on the Internet.
To turn on Private Browsing mode, go to Tools (in the menu bar) and then select Start Private Browsing. You will then get a popup menu asking you if you would really like to start Private Browsing mode. Hit the “Start Private Browsing” button to continue.
To be able to tell that you are in Private Browsing mode, the Firefox window title will show (Private Browsing) after the page title you are looking at. When you are privately browsing, the browser will not remember:
* Visited pages
* Form and Search Bar entries
* Passwords
* Download List entries
* Cookies
* Cached files
If you create a new bookmark while in Private Browsing mode, you will keep it after turning Private Browsing mode off. Also, if you save or download any files to your PC, those files will not be removed when you stop Private Browsing mode either (they will not though show up in the Downloads window).
To turn Private Browsing mode off , you will want to click on Tools in the menu bar, and the select Stop Private Browsing. To confirm you have done this correctly, check the Firefox window’s title bar to make sure (Private Browsing) is no longer showing.

Make HTML 5 Videos Go Full Screen

The talk about Firefox 3.5 supporting the HTML 5 support for playing videos without the need of a player was pretty sweet. Seeing it in action, now that I have Firefox 3.5 installed is even sweeter. You know what would put the icing on the cake? If I could make those videos go to full screen resolutions. 
The Full Screen Video add-on for Firefox does that. Once installed, it adds a “Full Screen” menu option, when you right-click on any HTML5 powered video. As of right now the only two known issues with this awesome extension are:
* When switching to full screen, the video will load and play from the start.
* Full screen is really only implemented on Windows at this point. On other operating systems, it’s merely a maximized window.

After slightly more than a year in development, Firefox 3.5 is finally here. As planned, it is an evolutionary update that builds on the significant performance enhancements and features introduced in Firefox 3.0, to deliver a still more responsive experience, more private, and extending the possibilities of the web by supporting a new set of powerful web standards.
Let’s take a look at what’s new in Firefox 3.5.
A new icon
Firefox 3.5 introduces an updated Firefox icon, that aims to reflect the evolution Firefox has gone through in the last three releases since the last update for Firefox 1.5. The new icon features a stronger 3D look with deeper shadows over the globe, and flames actually surrounding the globe. It also adds detail to the hand and snout and furrier snout and ears.
In low resolutions like Windows and Linux taskbar icons, the changes will go almost unnoticeable but for a slight change in colors and saturation.
Privacy
A new private mode is now available from the Tools menu. Whatever you visit, search, or download is cleared as soon as you return to normal mode or exit Firefox, including cookies, passwords, and web forms. At this time the only hint you get while in private mode is some text added to the title bar. Future versions of Firefox may revisit the user interface for a better way to let you know you’re in private mode while not letting others which would be counterproductive.
What happens when you forgot to enter private mode before entering a site you want to keep for yourself? You have two options. One, tell Firefox to forget about that site: open the Library (Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks…) look for any page in the site in your History, right click on it, and select Forget About This Site.
Option 2, tell Firefox to forget about the last few hours, the day or everything. In the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History…, the amount of time, the specific elements you want to discard, and you are done.
The Privacy options page has been updated with a dramatically streamlined interface where you can opt for Firefox defaults which remembers your browsing and allows cookies (like Firefox 3), set it to always run in private mode, or customize for something in between. You can also exclude history and bookmarks from the location bar suggestions in a new separate option.
Tabbed Browsing
Tabbed browsing is now the default browsing mode as the tab bar is always visible. This is a setting many people has requested as default for years before and the decision was finally made. There are two direct consequences: the throbber (activity indicator) is gone from the menu bar since each tab already has sits own. While it may seem a great idea, it has the inconvenience of being a moving target, so if you want to know if the current page is loading you have to first locate the current tab’s place in the tab bar. Fortunately, it is still available in the Customize Toolbar dialog so you can add it back in a blink.
The other consequence, is that when only one tab remains open, it doesn’t have a close button; and, if you close it (with a keyboard shortcut or menu File/Close Tab) the whole window goes along.
The tab bar now sports a new tab button next to the last tab making it discoverable for new comers. Tabs can be dragged out of the current window into their own and dragged back if wanted. An option in the tab context menu allows to do the same thing.
A new option in the History menu now let you to restore recently closed windows and not only individual tabs as in previous versions.

You can restrict suggestion in the location bar to history, bookmarks or tags only, enter ^, * or + respectively somewhere between your terms. To include titles or addresses only, you enter # or @, and you can combine them with the previous operators to refine your suggestions.

Performance-wise, this release is significantly faster that Firefox 3 running web applications, thanks to the introduction of TraceMonkey, a technology that allows just in time JavaScript compilation for faster execution. Despite these improvements however, Chrome currently holds the crown for speed with better results in the main JavaScript performance tests, thanks in part to its V8 JavaScript engine.
Places, the history+bookmarks database is now significantly faster due to several improvement to the querying. Web feeds refresh has also been optimized so it won’t hang Firefox if updating several feeds at the same time.
More coolness
In the accessibility front, text formatting such as alignment and font weight, as well as the new audio and video play controls are exposed to assistive technologies via AT-SPI and IAccessible2 attributes properties which are well interpreted by popular screen readers Orca, NVDA, and JAWS. Text formatting even works in rich text areas like Gmail compose area, easing the task for people with visual disabilities.
Firefox 3.5 is available now in 68 locales for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux platforms, making it the current web browser available in most languages at this time.

Conclusion
Firefox 3.1 was originally planned as a completion release to get in some features that didn’t make it for Firefox 3 like new tab switching, private mode and video, but in the end it took a purpose of its own, prompting a version push to Firefox 3.5 and extending the originally targeted last year’s end release to mid-2009. But I find it completely worth it. I’ve been using 3.5 since the betas as my main browser (about 8 months now) and have to say I just don’t remember when was the last time it crashed.
Firefox 3 retirement starts today at update number 11 (3.0.11), and according to Mozilla policies it will go out of support six months from now, on December 31, 2009. But with 80% of add-ons ready and a very nice set of new features and performance gains it’s hard to justify not upgrading now.
Firefox update dialog windows are now more informative and show how long it will take. Add-on updates (specially large ones) also benefit of this enhancement.

But I find it completely worth it. I’ve been using 3.5 since the betas as my main browser (about 8 months now) and have to say I just don’t remember when was the last time it crashed.
Firefox 3 retirement starts today at update number 11 (3.0.11), and according to Mozilla policies it will go out of support six months from now, on December 31, 2009. But with 80% of add-ons ready and a very nice set of new features and performance gains it’s hard to justify not upgrading now.

At the end of the past week, Microsoft made available to the public the results of a “browser measuring contest” involving Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.05 and Google Chrome 1.0. What the Redmond company did was to measure the browser load times for the top 25 websites worldwide. In the software company’s own comparison, IE8 managed to come out on top of its rivals, besting the open source Firefox and Chrome which were released in 2008, and not the current 3.1/3.5 version of Firefox or the 2.0 flavor of Chrome. But the real question is does it matter?
Obviously, Microsoft is rather a new comer to the browser measuring game. Simply because Internet Explorer, while considered by rival browser makers a reference point, never actually needed to compare itself to competitive products, especially from the perspective of the dominant browser on the market. IE continues to account for the lion’s share when it comes down to browser usage share worldwide, but Firefox has made a dent in its dominance that is harder and harder to ignore. And fact is that for the first time in the long life of Internet Explorer, Microsoft has a release that it’s worth comparing, as it is bound to score at least on par with rivals, if not even best them in certain scenarios.
“Did you know that IE 8 Loads faster than Firefox 3.05 and Chrome 1.0 on the top 25 popular web sites? Is the faster on 5 out of the top 10 sites; 12 of the top 25; 3 times as many as Firefox; and 1/3 more than Chrome,” revealed Microsoft’s Rob Margel. The table included on the left, from the “Measuring Browser Performance: Understanding issues in benchmarking and performance analysis” study, contains all the results published by Microsoft.
“In line with the testing guidelines outlined in this paper we have used the browser “Done” indicator for timing when the page is completely loaded at that point. For pages which continue to load and change after the “Done” indication we have used common visual cues to generate the timings. Timing is started when the Go button is pressed. These timings were captured in January 2009; because Internet content is always changing you may get different timings when you run these tests,” Microsoft revealed.
The question remains. Does it matter that Google.com is loaded in 0.28 seconds by Chrome, 0.22 seconds by Firefox and 0.20 seconds by IE8? What does a mere 0.02-second difference in browser load times represent to the end user? Well, absolutely nothing. You would need a high speed camera just to notice the difference. And at the same time, differences such as 5.48 seconds for Chrome, 6.37 seconds for Firefox and 8.03 seconds for IE8 when loading Sina.com.cn are more than visible, and irking to the end users. Still, what Microsoft does is establishing that benchmarking is in no way representative of real-life.
“Many benchmarking tests cite results from tools such as SunSpider, Celtic Kane, V8 and iBench. Each is designed, at least in some way, to test only a portion of the end-user scenario. SunSpider primarily tests JavaScript performance and also some other popular functions used on websites today. Other popular benchmarks, Celtic Kane and V8, are also geared at testing only the JavaScript engine. Meanwhile, the iBench suite relies on a browser reporting when it’s finished loading a page. Since browsers differ on when they define a page is done loading, this test also yields unreliable results,” the company stated.
Fact is that any measurement performed involving browsers has to take into account a multitude of variables from caching behavior, to overhead and resource competition, but also connectivity and network device latency, Internet-based data, browser-targeted content, machine configurations, inconsistent definitions, and even extensibility. In this context, benchmarks and benchmark results remain largely a marketing tool more than anything else. Due to the sometimes minute differences between the browser load times in the tests performed by Microsoft, with some minor tweaks, rival browser makers Mozilla and Google could turn the same set of tests to their advantage easily. Such a situation certainly diminishes the relevance of browser measuring contests.
